As Lighthouse announces the return of the Young Producers programme for 2025, we caught up with last year’s graduate Alex Southwell, now in the final year of her BA (Hons) Event Management at AUB, to reflect on her experience…
It was really good. I extended my stay to 12 weeks and had an amazing time. We worked on several different projects doing a huge range of things, but the main thing was building up to what was the first ever Poole Pride.
That was a massive thrill because to be actively and creatively involved with something that means so much to so many people was really special.
For me, the big difference between anything I’d done before and Young Producers was working in a professional environment. I had experience of student projects but there was always this understanding that we were just learning. In the real world, working with people who do this all the time, excellence is expected and you have to deliver.
I think that was even more true with Poole Pride because it was so important; it really mattered.
The whole experience at Lighthouse made me more certain than ever that this is the world I want to work in. What I liked about it was that we were able to say what we hoped to get out of the course and then our programme was tailored to suit that. I drew so much confidence from the experience; it was entirely positive.
I’d love to come back as well, so I’m keeping my eye on internships.
Yes, it was hard work, but that’s why I loved it so much I think. I’ve always felt that the more you put in the better outcome you will enjoy and Young Producers certainly showed that to be true.
What we’re looking for…
Lighthouse wants to recruit two enthusiastic and driven young producers who are at the beginning of their career and are excited to get involved in producing and managing live events.
The successful applicants will receive on-the-job experience of producing events as part of this year’s Poole Pride, as well as the NT Connections Festival and other engagement events scheduled for Spring 2025. The young producers will receive regular 1-to-1 mentorship from the Creative Engagement team with a focus on supporting the delivery of their own personal development.
This is a free-to-access work placement programme. It is not a paid opportunity.
Requirements to apply:
- 16+ by the start date of the work placement.
- Availability across April-June 2025. Ideally, candidates would be available Saturday 7 June for Poole Pride. Applicants can expect to be required to spend one day a week on average for ten weeks, but this can be flexible.
- No previous work experience is required, but we want to meet applicants with a proven active interest in the creative industries. Applicants should have a deep-rooted passion for arts and culture and be enthused by the opportunity to deliver a high-quality experience for our audiences.
For an application form, or to find out more email academy@lighthousepoole.co.uk. Applications close Friday 28 February.
