Signposting pathways to the world of work

Hosted by BBC South Today reporter Sarah Farmer at Lighthouse this week, a panel of local employers provided practical actions and tips to young people finding their way in the world of work.

As part of Future Pathways, a new Dorset Careers Hub initiative to support parents/carers and young people, the livestreamed panel event was designed to help young people navigate recruitment processes in different employment sectors and talk with confidence about themselves and the skills they bring to a future employer.

On the panel were Ed Locke, Careers Manager, YTL Group; Tammy Markley, a Director of HR from Marriott Hotels; Martyn Balson, General Manager, Lighthouse; and Katy Elder, Widening and Participation Coordinator, Dorset Healthcare, NHS Dorset.

“We worked well together and the discussion was quite jovial and light-hearted,” says Martyn.

“We set out to describe the recruitment process for entry level jobs in our individual sectors that hopefully proved useful for the young people. There was a live audience in the room and a number of participants online who engaged with a Q&A session at the end.”

The panel event follows Discover! Creative Careers Week in November when Dorset Careers Hub hosted the Teacher Encounter initiative at Lighthouse and young people from local schools took part in technical theatre workshops and enjoyed a walk-through on the set of West End hit musical Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of), which was playing in the venue’s Theatre.
