Twenty years ago Tim Garland launched his Lighthouse Trio, a truly unique and formidable acoustic band where interplay is paramount. 2024 sees the 20th anniversary of this international trio that features pianist Gwilym Simcock and drummer/percussionist Asaf Sirkis.
Tim Garland – saxophone, Gwilym Simcock – piano, Asaf Sirkis – drums/percussion
Garland’s association with the prodigiously talented and much-praised Simcock goes back a long way. Both share a broadly similar musical approach that’s informed by a blend of fusion, folk, and classical forms, while the formidable Sirkis, a drummer and percussionist with a well-deserved reputation as one of the best in the business, seems at home in any environment, but here masterfully employs a bespoke kit of middle eastern frame drums perfect for the setting.
The trio’s three albums (If the Sea Replied, Libra and Lighthouse) capture their stunning agility and lyrical sensibility, with both Garland, whose seventeen year association with Chick Corea made his name widespread, and the now-world-renowned Simcock (Pat Metheny Band) sharing compositional input.
The anniversary concerts in 2024 will feature works from a project entitled Moment Of Departure created by Turkish painter and printmaker Esra Kizir Gokcen to complement new music, which will also be released on a new album in May.
Moment of Departure (click to find out more)
The Moment Of Departure project is the collaborative vision of Grammy Award-winning composer and jazz saxophonist Tim Garland and international fine artist Esra Kizir Gokcen.
The collaboration started as a commission and grew along the way to become a double album’s worth of music and substantial series of canvases.
The project has been further enriched along the way, with art workshops for diverse communities, many of whom have been interviewed on the subject of what hope means to them. Esra’s “Sail To Hope” collection has inspired much of Tim’s music on the album and has now inspired many of the workshop participants.
The other major work under the Moment of Departure heading is “The Forever Seed” essentially a violin concerto with improvised interludes demonstrating Tim’s broad vision as a musician.
