This recital by French pianist Patrick Hemmerlé presents 3 sonatas which have in common a playfulness and a lightness of spirit.
Mozart’s Sonata K330 is one of these little miracles that only he was capable of, a piece of utter perfection, where the apparent simplicity belies an unfathomable mastery. Beethoven’s Sonata opus 10-3 is a work of immense emotional contrast, between the frankly hilarious last movement, and a slow movement that probes the depth of the human psyche.
Nikolai Kapustin was a Ukrainian composer who died in 2020. He wrote a music strongly influenced by jazz, using classical forms such as sonatas, preludes and fugues, etudes, concertos and so on. He is rapidly becoming one of the few modern composers whose work is embraced both by the general public and the performers.
