Bournemouth Symphony Chorus presents

Britten War Requiem

Sat 12 Jul 2025

‘My subject is War, and the pity of War.
The Poetry is in the pity …
All a poet can do today is warn.’
Wilfred Owen

The words prefacing Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem are as resonant today as in 1962 when the work was first performed.

2025 marks the eightieth year since the ending of the second world war and the horrifying bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Bournemouth Symphony Chorus are proud and honoured to be touring to Japan to perform the War Requiem in September 2025, but are equally proud and honoured to be able to perform this stunning and moving work in Poole with the amazing Magna Sinfonia, Bournemouth Chamber Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus. We are joined by soloists Rusné Tušlaité  – soprano, Elgan Llŷr Thomas – tenor and Florian Störtz  – baritone, under the baton of our Chorus Director, Gavin Carr.

The paper crane is one of Japan’s classic origami designs with the belief that it’s wings carry the soul to paradise and that making 1,000 cranes would allow your wish to be granted. It has come to the fore in more recent years following the tragic story of Sadako Sasaki, a Hiroshima girl who was severely affected by radiation and set herself a goal of making 1,000 paper cranes.
