A Night of Blues ‘n’ Boogie

Sat 28 Jun 2025

'A Night of Blues & Boogie' - 3 great acts!

After previous sell-out performances, we highly recommend purchasing your tickets early for the seventh instalment of ‘A Night of Blues ‘n Boogie’ in our Sherling Studio.

The evening will kick off with the UK’s premier, truly authentic, Boogie-Woogie piano man Julian Philips, followed by the acoustic-blues of “powerhouse multi-instrumentalist” Eddie Martin.  As always, the night will close with the dynamic and ever-popular Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion, whose Hammond-organ-driven electric blues blend old-school tradition with a contemporary flair and sophistication. Prepare for an unforgettable night of entertainment!”

Julian Phillips – Solo Boogie-Woogie Piano

As one of the UK’s top boogie-woogie piano players, Julian has gained a great reputation for his wide and varied repertoire in the boogie and blues genre and is one of the founder organisers of the UK boogie-woogie festival here at Sturminster Newton.

Julian has played concerts and festivals in Europe and America and is highly esteemed by his fellow players.  He taught himself how to play the piano at the age of fourteen by listening to and interpreting the music of the great boogie-woogie pioneers including Jimmy Yancey and Pinetop Smith. His love and knowledge of blues ‘n boogie is infectious, and whether playing solo or performing with other musicians his enjoyment of the music is intensely evident.

Eddie Martin Solo acoustic guitar, harmonica & vocals “Folk and Blues”

Expect a rootsy mix of original songs shining the spotlight on a Londoner’s transatlantic touring experiences and musical development, which combines Delta-hardened slide with pretty finger-picking dexterity in the Jansch-Graham tradition.  His one-man-band live show engages vitality, humour, and master musicianship.

“Delta Blues and British folk and blues. Great and hard-bitten song writing. Powerhouse resonator fingerpicking and ragtime-tinged, open-tuned instrumental flashness! …”. – Guitarist Magazine

“Eddie Martin is one of the UK’s best.. with his phenomenal guitar playing, his skill with a rack harp, & his inimitable foot rhythm. Solo & acoustic or loud & electric, Martin’s a master of both.“ Penguin Eggs magazine, Canada

Zoe Schwarz Blue Commotion refresh the blues genre with eclectic arrangements, virtuosic playing and vocal prowess. Their vibrant, exciting live set is based around rootsy original songs, strong catchy riffs and exciting grooves; they mix old-school tradition with contemporary flare and sophistication.

Zoe’s dynamic and commanding vocal delivery, her majestic vocal sweep and her interpretive ability, are complimented by the unmistakable and inimitable touch and flow of Rob Koral-guitar; and the highly accomplished rhythm section of Pete Whittaker-Hammond organ and Eddie John drums who bring massive musical authority and the ability to push the music in unpredictable and exciting directions.
