Free to enjoy, explore Poole's part in the momentous Dunkirk evacuation of 1940 in a remarkable new exhibition commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France, and the 80th Anniversary of the end of World War II.
Delve into the stories of the individuals and vessels that played a crucial part in one of the most daring evacuations in military history. Featuring newly commissioned video, historic photographs and memorabilia, this exhibition explores events that saw over 320,000 men rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk.
Discover how Poole became a refuge for Dutch and Belgian boats carrying 3,000 refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied territories. Learn about the heroic flotilla of ‘little ships’—fishing boats, ferries, yachts, and Poole’s very own lifeboat, the Thomas Kirk Wright—that set sail for Dover and Dunkirk to aid in the evacuation. Explore the stories of men granted the status of ‘captain’ as they braved treacherous waters in service of their country.
This exhibition pays tribute to the extraordinary courage and collaboration that defined Operation Dynamo, St Valery’s Operation Cycle, and St Nazaire’s Operation Aerial.
Poole At Dunkirk is curated by Poole Maritime Trust with the support of Lighthouse Poole, Poole BID, Dolphin Centre, RNLI, The Keep Museum Dorchester and National Trust Brownsea Island.
