Before bidding a fond farewell to Lighthouse, marketing assistant Aiofe Kelly took time to collect some thoughts on the experience she has gained over the six-month internship…
I have had real hands-on experience which I’d have struggled to get elsewhere, diving into the deep end of marketing. As soon as I started I felt part of the team; I was given responsibility, trained on a variety of industry standard software and contributed constructively to meetings.
I’ve been involved in some big pieces of work including the Winter Brochure and the 12 Days of Christmas campaign. I’ve also worked to raise awareness of Lighthouse, building brand perception, composing e-newsletters, attending press nights and helping to create objective driven communications. I learned to juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, while soaking up everything else I could.
I have particularly enjoyed learning about customer segmentation and the role that data has in creating successful marketing campaigns. Understanding customer behaviour to grow audiences and using data to make impactful decisions has built on my analytical skills in an ever-more data driven world.
I have had firsthand experience of public relations in a large multi-arts venue, which has been insightful in coordinating communications on a large scale. This has grown my understanding of media relations, press coverage, and developing and shaping an organisation’s public image.
I’ve really enjoyed being creative and working with a hugely creative team, which is a crucial aspect of marketing. Creating engaging copy and outside-the-box strategies can turn a show to a sold-out success. Working with a graphic designer for the first time, making eye-catching content and writing effective copy, the role allowed me to explore my creative skills.
Lighthouse is a fast-paced environment, but a friendly one. With different shows every day and people from all walks of life visiting, it is a centre of community and inspiration. Lighthouse provides a space for creation, whatever that may be, a community play or careers! You couldn’t think of a better place for an internship.
I could go on and on about all the skills I learned and the wide variety of experiences I’ve had. I believe this internship has been vital to my next steps. Not only for the skills I’ve developed, but also for the confidence I’ve gained.
*And from everyone at Lighthouse… thanks Aiofe, and good luck in what is sure to be a bright future!
